Hi all, I purchased one of these on Saturday (I paid £5:99) & it eventually works with most of my TV, PVR, stereo, etc, but I just cannot get it to work with the Tevion Home Theatre System, TCHTS2100!! I only brought really it to replace a duff control for this unit. Seems a shame that they cannot supply the correct codes to work with their own stuff!! If anyone has had any joy with a code for this setup I'd be over the moon to hear: I dont like the idea of entering all 10k codes to find the right one. (I have already tried the search without any joy.) Thanks. Hi guys, Got one of these today to have a play with and didn't bother with the codes, just spent an hour or so learning from my other remotes. I now have it doing everything I need, controls telewest tv drive, hyundai a321 tv, logitech 5.1. The only thing I cannot get to work is the all off/all on feature. It just doesn't work at all lol, anybody any ideas? I have set the on/off switch up for each device but no joy. Bugging me now has it would be a nice feature. I have set it the macro up to switch between cable and xbox. It switches the tv source and the sound source, works really well. Anyone using it on their SKY+ box? I set mine up using the code, but noticed the play, record etc buttons were not working. Learnt the buttons from the original remote, but the problem is this. Click to expand.0905 does my Technosonic PVR101 just fine-(Or search under the VCR product group and you'll find it!!)--not quite all the buttons you need, but I think I only had to program 3 or 4 keys with the 'learn' command. I had the same thing with my PACE Twinview PVR- that was hidden away in the Satellite lists!!! Apart from the SKY plus codes (see above post), all I'm missing now is the codes for my DMTech 37' LCD and my Auvion 1001 PVR (Don't hold much hope out for finding THAY one, but as it was also badged as Sigmatech and NorthQ, you never know!!). If anyone comes across them, please let me know!! Thanks Jofab. When bought this remote I joked with the wife about the only thing that probably would not work with it was the tevion hdmi player. And I was right. I could not believe it everything else worked almost pefect. My humax freeview pvr every button was mapped better than the orignal remote. Tevion remote control md 8. This will work with most all universal remote controls. If you don't have the code do the following: Automatic. The biggest plus about this remote is it works my dreambox sat system. I could not believe it was listed in the codes a replacement for that one is £30 alone. No problems with my Tosiba TV few menu buttons need programing but works great. I love the knock through for the Volume and mute superb feature for me Couple of negative things I have found are I love the joystick for flicking through channels but the ok button can be a pain sometimes occaionally you change channel as it requires a hard press. It also when in dsat mode returns to TVmode. I have had a couple of lockups with the remote and had remove the batteries to reset it but it keeps all the codes and the custom functions (thank God). All in all I am well chuffed with this piece of kit. Our Tv room now is so tidy without 5 remotes knocking around. Regards Coley. Click to expand.I think this 'ALL ON/OFF' function is a bit silly. To make it work you have to press the on/off once, then again a second time holding it down for about 3 seconds after which you should release the button & a message appears in the LCD screen saying 'ALL OFF'. At this point (providing the remote is pointing towards your AV equipment) the stuff which is on should turn off. The daft thing about this function is that if some AV equipment is off anyway, activating this function will not only turn off the equipment which is running but will at the same time turn on the equipment which is off So then you need to turn this stuff off individually because if you activate the 'ALL OFF' function again it will turn that stuff off & then turn on the stuff which you just managed to turn off!!! Click to expand.I had a similar problem with my Sony MD recorder (using a tape seting), which mapped for basic functions but would respond to neither a single nor a double press of the record button. In the end it learnt that function from the original remote; it still would not function when assigned to the record button, but did so when assigned to an adjacent red TXT button. Meanwhile, has anyone found out how to make a Daewoo Freeview PVR work, other than in learning mode? I've tried the 'find code' method and all the Daewoo VCR codes. I tried Tech Support, but they don't have anything like the same backup that the One-for-All guys have. Just got this remote from Aldi: MD 81299 Really having problems with a Tevion DVD!it just isn't responding and the one code that seems to work only turns on and off.nothing else (0332). Only thing I can recommend (though I haven't tried this) is to try out the learning function of the Tevion remote if you don't have any luck with the codes. There's quite a lot of stuff being made all over Europe these days whether it's a cheap or expensive make. Seem to remember some of the Panasonic Viera plasmas with 'Made in Czech Republic' on the back. And a Sony CD player I bough about 5 years ago is made in Hungary. So long as it works, is reliable & is finished to a high standard that's the most important thing. 'The Devouring of Heaven and Earth II: Battle of Red Cliffs'?), is a side-scrolling beat-'em-up produced by Capcom first released as a coin-operated arcade game in 1992. It is the second arcade game based on the Tenchi wo Kurau manga, following Dynasty Wars. Warriors of Fate is a beat'em up with 9 stages, in each of which there are large mobs including spearman, archers, strongmen, bomb-wielding opponents, and at least one Wei boss. There can be up to three players on-screen at the same time. Using two buttons, Attack and Jump, the characters all have standard moves typical of Capcom side-scrollers of the day. Common enemies including Wei soldiers such as bandits, privatees, wrestlers, fatties and thieves will keep poping up from everywhere. Users Compatibility List. Ultima's pSX Frontend v1.12.1 (Windows). I did find that game id matched up with a game called Tenchi o Kurau 2. CoolROM.com's game information and ROM download page for Tenchi wo Kurau II: Sekiheki no Tatakai (Japan 921031) (MAME). In the end of each stage there is a Wei general as stage boss. Li Dian, Xiahou Dun, Xu Chu, Zhang Liao, Cao Ren, Xu Huang, the infamous Lu Bu as final boss. After defeating them all, there is also Cao Cao himself who would try to escape. There is also a variety of weapons in the game which can be picked up. As with most side-scrollers, food is used to replenish health and can be found in various breakable containers in the game level. One notable feature of the game is the ability to summon a warhorse which adds more attacks to the characters, generally involving pole-arms (except long bow for Huang Zhong). Each character except Zhao Yun was given a special wrestling throw of their own, like in Final Fight and The Punisher. Even in the US release, the game was particularly gory for its time. Slash weapons and special moves would have an additional maiming effect on enemies when used for the final blow and the enemy boss can be blown up, decapitated, or had their bodies severed. Notably, even while using bare fists, certain characters could still cleave enemies in half, exposing vital organs, and leaving a terrible mess nobody wants to clean up. This tactic even works on some bosses and coincidentally ends up showing more gory detail since the bosses are larger characters. The game included two bonus stages in the middle wherein the characters compete in an eating contest which required rapid pressing of buttons and rotations of the joystick and another is where the characters practice their skills on the practice dummies of the final boss. If there are multiple players, the second bonus stage will have the players spar with each other for the glory of the emperor, gaining massive bonus points and bragging rights in the arcade. After wards, both characters continue as if nothing had occurred. Three key points: Every vita below 3.67 CANNOT be activated. Every new Vita outside of JP comes with. We've now got several methods of playing PS1 games, and each has various downsides despite the efforts it took to allow them. Starting with the most relevant, Adrenaline's co-opting of the native Vita emulator of the PS1 is a really good solution for a huge amount of games. A downside is that without POPS (which is incompatible) or some method of editing playback, many games don't work or have a large array of bugs. The second method is Retro Arch's PS1 emulation under (I believe) PCSX-R. This is the most compatible yet suffers slowdown in more complex games. You'll never find issue booting games, though. However, temperamental ISO mounting means that the VITA shouldn't leave the application or go into sleep mode. Doing so causes 'disc read errors' as far as the game software is concerned. For the second problem, if you're patient there's a workaround: you savestate, reboot retroarch, boot the emulation again, and loadstate. A pretty decent inconvenience to me, but hopefully the reader finds that advice useful. TLDR: Adrenaline is considerably buggy, but full speed. Retroarch is less buggy, slower, and needs reloading if you want to take a break. My intention isn't to denigrate any dev (from the scene or at SONY) for their hard work, just to inform. I've been spending a bit of time looking into the PS1 emulation on the Vita. Following ARK and Adrenaline I figured out at a high level how they achieve PS1 emulation. In short, ARK uses some form of witchcraft to use the PSP version of POPS (judging from the settings menu system being similar to the PSP version) Adrenaline leverages what I believe is the native Vita POPS (again, system menu system matches that of the Vita PS1 emulation). Rapid Racer is my game of choice (known as Turbo Prop Racer in the US) it was my fav game when I got my PS1, so it's my benchmark game. On the PSP, POPSloader 4.01 plays the game perfect, but any version above it, graphics glitch and CDDA audio is broken. Now, ARK can run Rapid Racer, however the framerate basically sucks, no sound but it's playable at half the speed, plus there are still gfx issues. This suggests to me that it's using (most likely) PSP 6.61 POPS, however, ARK POPS.prx does not match POPS.prx that of what comes with PSP 6.61. So I can't figure out where ARK POPS comes from or how it actually works other than it must be running as an emulation (likely reason for poor performance) or some sort of port. Meanwhile, Adrenaline runs the game at full speed + audio, but it gfx glitches. TheFlow mentioned that compatibility is based on PSP 6.61 as that is likely what the Vita POPS was ported from. The way I see it, it means the awesome POPSloader that we had on the PSP is not likely possible on the Vita being that it's coded for the MIPS processor on the PSP as opposed to the ARM Processor of the Vita. Ideally what needs to happen is that someone essentially needs to port each version of PSP POPS to the Vita to create a similar POPSloader app on the Vita. These are just my observations, I could be (likely be) wrong, but I spent more time than I should trying to understand this. I'm no coder or reverse engineering genius, but really, as TheFlow said, we are stuck with the PS1 emu that Sony built for us. Hacking world, here is your challenge. Do you accept? It's coded for the MIPS processor on the PSP as opposed to the ARM Processor of the Vita. The VITA has the PSP MIPS processor on the board which it uses to emulate PSP. I believe that it uses the PSP processor in order to emulate the PS1 as well, for efficiency sake (it'd be a lot of effort for little difference, right?) I think that you'd need to build a new POPSLoader, based on what TheFlow says, but there's no porting between systems. Those are my estimations, anyway, the rest of what you said is valuable information for other users. Most of what goes wrong might be rectified if you can give your US or EU version of the game the Japanese SLP#-##### code. That worked for Metal Gear Solid, as it uses the audio to sync frame cycles, and for some reason only the Japanese product number would allow that to kick in on PSP across region versions. VITA POPS is some kind of hybrid of PSP POPS. CPU emulation is running natively on MIPS processor and SPU and GPU emulation are running on the VITA side. This is because of the ME, which the vita lacks. But PSX games on the ARC use PSP POPS, where sound is processed through ME, we don't have this chip on the vita so all ME instructions NOPed or skipped and we don't have sound because of this. To overcome lack of ME Total Noob ported PEOPS SPU plugin in his TN-V, but it wasn't best solution. CPU + SPU processing on the single MIPS processor was too hard for it in some scenarios. If only we had PEOPS SPU+native PSP POPS in Adrenaline as the different mode for PSX Games. Not through VPKs. Bubbles are like windows shortcuts, They aren't the game, but a redirect to launch the game. The vita just makes it so that you can delete what is associated with the bubble when you delete it. That said, what can be theoretically done, is a bubble, that launches ARK or Adrenaline, and the game within a small time-frame, appearing to have the same effect, which is what Ark already can do for PSP and theoretically ps1. So, no you can't just not use ARK or Adrenaline or similar homebrews, install a ps1 game as a vpk and get a bubble. Honestly, what I just described is what the vita already does, it just doesnt show you it. It engages the epsp and psp processor, and loads the game into it. Currently testing PS1 games on a freshly unboxed PSTV running the newest Adrenaline. Here are some observations: Extremely noticeable input lag, tested on both 480p and 1080i (with odd rows taken out) and smoothing was off. Tested with CTR, R-Type Delta for 3D, and Warriors of Fate (Tenchi o Kurau II), Mobile Light Force (Gunbird), Rayman for 2D. Ergheiz is a 480i game and doesn't seem to be pixel perfect. Some of those are 60 fps games, and they were all official PSone Classics. Can't turn off bilinear filtering although smoothing was off. My expectation was that 240p would just be line doubled for a crisp 480p image in 480p mode, but it was quite blurry. The sharp line doubling does work on Vita and it looks great. Aspect ratio with PS1 Original screen mode and 480p is completely mangled. It feels like 480p is just 720p squished down just like the 480p LiveArea but that's just an observation. I was expecting something like a 320x240 laid out pixel perfect on a 720x480 output, that's clearly not the case. Also, the aspect ratio gets wider by a few% when you open the official PS1 settings screen. There's something wei. Are you looking for 'Psihologia Crimei Online Subtitrat'-related keyword data? Fac diferenta. For example, the iPhone is a high-end smartphone in a world where cheap Android phones are $100 or less. But Apple's CEO Apple's iPhones and iPads as products exclusively for the rich. He pointed out in an interview with Fortune published on Monday that there are iPhone and iPad models at around $300, and said other companies have higher margins than Apple's. 'But if you look across our product lines, you can buy an iPad today for under $300. You can buy an iPhone, depending upon which one you select, for in that same kind of ballpark,' Cook. 'And so these are not for the rich.' 'We obviously wouldn’t have over a billion products that are in our active installed base if we were making them for the rich because that’s a sizable number no matter who’s looking at the numbers,' he continued. Cook is most likely referring to the iPad model that starts at $329, and the iPhone SE, which is listed at $399 on Apple's website. These comments in a longer interview come as Apple is expected to launch on Tuesday a new model of iPhone, likely to be called the iPhone X,, according to analyst predictions. The current top iPhone, the iPhone 7 Plus, starts at $769. The increased price for the top-end iPhone raises two challenges for Apple: whether consumers are ready to pay that much for a smartphone, as well as whether the presence of a high-end model may make new entry-level iPhones seem less impressive. But Apple has been executing a new pricing product strategy for the past few years. The 'Apple Tax' — the premium over similar products from other companies that you would have to pay for Apple's design and software — has been on its way out for awhile. Now, what Apple has started doing recently is making its very high-end products more expensive, while making its entry-level products more accessible. Think about the $20,000 gold Apple Watch, or the forthcoming iMac Pro. So now Apple has premium products targeting a completely different part of the Apple user base than its entry-level products. This helps Apple keep its margins high, and gives it a way to crack into new markets, because when you're as big as Apple, you need new strategies to keep growing. Logistics giant DHL and tech titan Huawei Technologies will a Narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT) network to connect trucks carrying parts and other assets to an automotive assembly plant in Liuzhou, China. The firms expect to expand the tests, which will remain in the proof-of-concept phase until the end of September, to other areas of China once this initial phase is completed. NB-IoT is a low-power, wide-area network (LPWAN) standard designed to connect enterprise IoT devices that use very little power and transmit very little data. The move could give NB-IoT a much needed boost. • NB-IoT needs to catch up to LoRa, its rival standard. Standardized by telecom industry group 3GPP for commercial use only, NB-IoT has grown and is now available in a handful of markets including Singapore, Spain, and part of Brazil. But that pales in comparison to its rival standard LoRa, which has been used for years to connect enterprise IoT devices and is available in most of North America, Europe, and pockets of Asia, which means NB-IoT needs to grow very quickly if it's going to connect a large share of the 700 million IoT devices that will be connected to a LPWAN in 2021. • Having two big names behind it could give it the needed boost. DHL has a massive global presence, especially in China, where its revenue 10.1% to reach $3.2 billion in Q2 2017. Meanwhile, Huawei, which is known for its smartphones, is one of the largest tech companies in China, $75 billion last year alone. That means that there's a lot of room for these firms to scale up their use of NB-IoT throughout the rest of their operations. Furthermore, smaller firms elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region may choose to follow Huawei and DHL's lead and use the standard. And the payoff from that could be large — even if NB-IoT's growth is primarily driven by the Chinese market. North America currently leads in IoT adoption, but spending on connected devices in China will rise to $121 billion in 2022, according to. That alone could make NB-IoT relevant even if it's unable to overtake LoRa in other core markets like North America. BI Intelligence, Business Insider's premium research service, expects that more than 24 billion IoT devices will be installed globally in 2020, and the vast majority of these will fall into the small, low-power category. So networks that are better suited to connect these low-power IoT devices — notably, Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) — are being developed. These networks can connect devices over large geographic areas because of their long range, but use less battery power on the devices they connect and offer cheaper data subscriptions than traditional cellular networks. Interest in LPWANs among IoT providers and end users is growing in response to the opportunities these benefits present. Has compiled that: • Details the broad need for low-cost, low-power internet connectivity for IoT devices that LPWANs will help meet. • Forecasts the growth of the LPWAN market including new networking providers and traditional mobile carriers that are launching their own LPWANs. • Examines how LPWANs will be adopted by different industries that are launching IoT projects. • Compares the distinct characteristics and advantages of different standards for LPWANs. • Explains how the LPWAN market will develop over the coming years in regards to different standards and competitors. • Examines what the future of internet network connectivity for IoT devices will look like, including LPWANs and the coming of 5G mobile networks. Marco Polo bills itself as the 'video walkie talkie,' a video chat app that lets you send quick messages back and forth with your friends. Much like Snapchat, Marco Polo traffics in messages that are only a few seconds long. Unlike Snapchat, however, the app saves your videos so you can have a running conversation with your friend or a group of friends. Marco Polo was created by a company called Joya Communications, which says that its mission is 'to help people feel close no matter the distance, enabling people to remain connected in convenient and meaningful ways.' Investors are concerned that electric cars are poised to dominate the transportation future, so they've rewarded with a massive market capitalization and punished the stock of traditional automakers, such as and. Even though old-line car companies, along with suppliers and dealers, have enjoyed record annual sales of 17.5 million and 17.55 million new vehicles in 2015 and 2016, optimism about the industry is in short supply. Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas thinks there might be a name that investors don't properly appreciate, however:. His price target for shares of the nearly 120-year-old company is $46, and he rates the stock 'overweight,' with a bull case for $80 (the stock is flat year-to-date and was trading at $31 on Monday). In a research note on all things tires, Jonas stressed that Goodyear could finish out 2017 strong. 'The stock is one of the cheapest stocks in the S&P 500, the US Autos & Shared Mobility coverage universe, and global tire stocks,' he wrote. 'GT is relatively less exposed to the light vehicle credit cycle, used car prices, and [internal combustion engine] power train decline, the three key factors that drive our cautious view on many names in the sector.' The bottom line is that cars aren't going away, and both electric and autonomous vehicles will require something round to roll around on. In fact, Morgan Stanley expects the total number of miles traveled to 'double to 20 trillion' by 2030, and 'triple to 30 trillion' by 2040. That's going to mean a whole lot of worn-out tired over the next 20 years. SEE ALSO: NOW WATCH. Is expected to announce the details of the new iPhone on Tuesday and investors are driving the stock price higher in anticipation. Apple is trading 2.0% higher on Monday ahead of the launch event. Last year, the iPhone maker slipped slightly lower on the day before the event and gained 0.46% as investors watched the iPhone 7 launch event day-of. The is expected to be much more exciting than its predecessor, however. Amit Daryanani, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets, predicts the event will be 'game changing.' Daryanani is bullish on the slate of features expected from the new phone and has a price target for the company's stock of $180, which is 11.57% higher than Apple's current price. Daryanani, and others, are bullish on the new model because it will be the first update to the phone's form factor in several generations. The last major update to the look of the devices came when the phone was updated from the square and boxy iPhone 5 to the current curved look of the larger iPhone 6 and 7., while the current phones are aluminum backed. It is also expected to have a bezel-less screen in the same vein as Samsung's Galaxy S8. Despite all the leaks around the new phone, Daryanani still thinks the device has the capacity to surprise investors and customers. Of the next phone, but others say that customers, and instead care about less-hyped features like wireless charging more. The higher price of the next iPhone may give pause to those looking to upgrade, as. But Daryanani thinks that even if customers upgrade to the lower-priced, iterative devices likely to be launched alongside the iPhone X, the average selling price of the iPhone device line will be boosted by the new phones. Apple is also expected to launch updates to other products along with the new iPhones. The which would allow it to connect to the internet independently of a paired iPhone. Florida highways were gridlocked on Friday as close to 6 million drivers headed north to escape Hurricane Irma. It was a taxing experience for drivers in traditional gas-powered vehicles who experienced. But it was also a stressful experience for electric-car owners who were worried about running out of juice before making the escape. Tesla was able to assist some customers in the storm's path. Tesla previously sold Model S and Model X vehicles with a 75-kWh battery pack, but gave owners the option to only purchase 60kWh or 70kWh of energy. That way, owners could buy a cheaper vehicle, but pay for the extra range at a later date. Like all vehicle upgrades, Tesla can push through the range bump via a software update. One customer asked Tesla for access to the software upgrade so he could evacuate easier, a Tesla spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider. Now all Tesla owners in the hurricane's path can get the update for free until September 16, provided they have the base Model S and Model X. The update releases an extra 30 to 40 miles of range, reported. It can cost between $4,500 to $9,000, depending on the vehicle model. It was a nice gesture from Tesla that also highlights the biggest issue with electric cars. Most vehicles have yet to achieve a range that people are comfortable with, a problem that faces greater scrutiny in emergency situations. Tesla no longers sells the base Model S and Model X vehicles, so future buyers have to settle on a range they're comfortable with and pay accordingly going forward. SEE ALSO: NOW WATCH. What happens to your brain when you get a concussion? Concussions are a type of mild traumatic brain injury. A concussion is usually caused by a hard blow to the head. While the blow causes immediate pain on the outside, what happens within is where the real damage can occur. Thankfully, your brain does not absorb the brunt of the impact. Instead, it's the protective liquid barrier between your brain and skull. As a result, the liquid sloshes back and forth, carrying your brain with it. This can bruise the brain tissue at the sites of impact. But something more sinister is happening deep in the tissue. The brain's motion is stretching and ripping your axons apart. If this sounds bad, you're right! Axons are delicate fibers that carry electrical signals throughout your brain. Without these signals, you can't control your body. When axons break apart, they die and release harmful toxins. These toxins will damage healthy nerves in your brain. You may experience this nerve damage as one, or more, of the following: headache, dizziness, fatigue, blurry vision, unconsciousness. Plus, the damage caused by your first concussion actually raises your risk of a second one within the following year. Each year, over 1 million Americans suffer from a concussion, or similar mild brain trauma. Most people will recover after a few weeks. Supercharging is a tremendous perk of Tesla ownership. The company's cars can be recharged quickly using the fastest available charging at nearly 400 locations in the US. In about an hour a depleted Tesla vehicle battery can be restored to full charge; Supercharging used to be free for all Tesla owners, but recently Tesla has begun leveling a fee for new owners who buy a Model S or X vehicle, if they exceed a yearly credit cap. Tesla doesn't want owners to use the Supercharger network for daily charging. It was designed to eliminate so-called 'range anxiety' and to enable owners to travel long distances in their cars. But the company recognizes that not everyone has a garage where a slower charger intended for overnight rejuicing can be installed. So on Monday, Tesla announced the rollout of new, urban Superchargers in Boston and Chicago; Beantown will get eight stalls, and the Windy City will get ten. 'As part of our commitment to make Tesla ownership easy for everyone, including those without immediate access to home or workplace charging, we are expanding our Supercharger network into city centers,' Tesla said in a statement. 'Supercharger stations in urban areas will be installed in convenient locations, including supermarkets, shopping centers and downtown districts, so it’s easy for customers to charge their car in the time it takes to grocery shop or run errands,' the company said. 'They also have the same pricing as our existing Superchargers, which is far cheaper than the cost of gasoline.' The new Superchargers have a more compact design than the existing units, but according to Tesla, they can recharge at the same pace. 'Superchargers in urban centers deliver a steady 72 kilowatts of power, even if another Tesla begins charging in an adjacent stall,' Tesla said. 'This creates a consistent, predictable charging experience with an average Supercharging session lasting around 45-50 minutes in city centers.' Tesla also said that the new Superchargers have a 'post' design to conserve space in more crowded urban environments. The carmaker — which is on the verge of a massive uptick in ownership as it begins delivering on roughly 500,000 pre-orders for its Model 3 sedan — provided details in a. Elon Musk's Boring Company has ambitious plans to revolutionize transportation by building a But it may have competition from a private company that has already made some progress with the US government. The Northeast Maglev (TNEM), a private company, was founded in 2011 with the goal of building a high-speed rail between New York and the country's capital. TNEM wants to first build the route between Washington D.C. And Baltimore before eventually extending it to New York. TNEM said its rail would be able to transport passengers between Washington D.C. And Baltimore in just 15 minutes. Traversing D.C. To New York would take an hour. By comparison, Amtrak's Acela train, its fastest option, takes just under three hours. The secret lies in bringing Japan's maglev technology to the Northeast Corridor, TNEM CEO Wayne Rogers told Business Insider. Maglev technology allows trains to magnetically levitate (hence the name) above a track, allowing them to achieve higher speeds than traditional rail lines. A maglev train built by Central Japan Railway set a in 2015. The maglev will eventually connect Tokyo and Nagoya, but won't open to the public until 2027. Central Japan Railway, a private company, has said it will collaborate with TNEM on the US project. 'Our concept is to piggyback on all the work that they’ve already done,' Rogers said of working with Central Japan Railway. TNEM has acquired a railroad franchise and a $28 million grant from Maryland's Department of Transportation and Economic Development Corporation. The company has also collected $100 million in private funding. The federal funding, secured in 2015, is being used to conduct an engineering feasibility analysis and environmental impact study for the Baltimore to Washington D.C. That process could take another two years to complete, Rogers said. Still, a maglev train won't come cheap. The Baltimore-Washington D.C. Route will alone cost 'north of $10 billion,' Rogers said. He said tickets would cost 'slightly more' than an Acela train, but declined to give specifics. Central Japan Railways' route between Tokyo and Nagoya is estimated at nearly $100 billion, according to the. The astronomical price mostly comes from the cost of tunneling. Maglev trains require a straight rail in order to operate safely. To ensure the alignment is perfectly straight, the majority of the Washington D.C. To Baltimore route will need to be constructed underground, Rogers said. 'Tunneling is the main cost and the main driver of schedule,' he said. Musk's Hyperloop would also travel in a vacuum-sealed tunnel. The Boring Company is looking to cut down costs by building a tunneling machine that can dig and place reinforcements in the wall at the same time, in April. Not only will TNEM be tasked with raising enough funds for the project, but it will also face political obstacles. A maglev train would surely pose competition for the airline industry and Amtrak. Rogers said the maglev should be seen as yet another addition to the growing transportation infrastructure in the US. Airlines could channel their resources toward more long-distance flights; Amtrak would still be a viable option for carrying freight and people looking for lower ticket prices. Rogers also said it's a more viable option than Musk's Hyperloop because the technology is proven. 'My personal opinion is we are 15 to 20 years away from being able to build it and safely move people,' Rogers said of the Hyperloop. Rogers' has an optimistic outlook for a plan that has been in the works for six years, but still isn't nearing construction. However, it's arguably further along than Musk's Hyperloop proposal, which has so far only secured ' for construction. SEE ALSO: FOLLOW US: NOW WATCH. Google has appealed a record-breaking €2.4 billion (£2.1 billion; $2.9 billion) fine from European regulators. The European Commission, which acts as the European Union's competition watchdog, on June 27 after deciding that the Californian tech giant unfairly promotes its shopping service at the top of its search results. Google confirmed the appeal to Business Insider but declined to comment further or give any detail. If you're not familiar with Google Shopping, it's that graphical bar that shows up any time you search for a product. For example, if you Google the term 'frock', Google will show you some pictures of dresses with some links to third-party retailers such as British department store House of Fraser. Let's say you didn't want to buy a frock though, and were just searching for the term. Normal results still show up underneath Google Shopping, but it still takes up almost half of the screen. The Commission told Google to stop displaying its shopping service so prominently at the top of search results by September 28, saying it is an abuse of power. When the fine was issued, Europe's competition commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, said: 'What Google has done is illegal under EU antitrust rules. It denied other companies the chance to compete on the merits and to innovate. And most importantly, it denied European consumers a genuine choice of services and the full benefits of innovation.' She added: 'Google has come up with many innovative products and services that have made a difference to our lives. That's a good thing. But Google's strategy for its comparison shopping service wasn't just about attracting customers by making its product better than those of its rivals. Instead, Google abused its market dominance as a search engine by promoting its own comparison shopping service in its search results, and demoting those of competitors.' Following the ruling, Google said it 'respectfully' disagreed and was considering whether to appeal., Google's senior vice president and general counsel, Kent Walker, challenged the finding. 'Our ability to do that well isn't favoring ourselves, or any particular site or seller — it's the result of hard work and constant innovation, based on user feedback,' he wrote.' Given the evidence, we respectfully disagree with the conclusions announced today. We will review the Commission's decision in detail as we consider an appeal, and we look forward to continuing to make our case.' Additional reporting by Shona Ghosh. The Mi Mix 2 is strikingly similar to its predecessor — it still sports a full-ceramic body, once again designed with Starck — but features some tweaks that might make it appealing outside of China. For one, it features 42 LTE bands, which means it can support the vast majority of carriers' networks across critical markets such as Europe and the United States. The rest is heavily borrowed from the original device, but with upgraded internals like Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 835 processor, coupled with 6 or 8GB of RAM, and a 6-inch Full HD display with an elongated 18:9 aspect ratio. In accountancy, depreciation refers to two aspects of the same concept:[1] The decrease in value of assets (fair value depreciation) The allocation of the cost of assets to periods in which the assets are used (depreciation with the matching principle) Depreciation is a method of reallocating the cost of a tangible asset over its useful life span of it being in motion. Businesses depreciate long-term assets for both tax and accounting purposes. The former affects the balance sheet of a business or entity, and the latter affects the net income that they report. Generally the cost is allocated, as depreciation expense, among the periods in which the asset is expected to be used. This expense is recognized by businesses for financial reporting and tax purposes. Methods of computing depreciation, and the periods over which assets are depreciated, may vary between asset types within the same business and may vary for tax purposes. These may be specified by law or accounting standards, which may vary by country. There are several standard methods of computing depreciation expense, including fixed percentage, straight line, and declining balance methods. Depreciation expense generally begins when the asset is placed in service. For example, a depreciation expense of 100 per year for five years may be recognized for an asset costing 500. In determining the profits (net income) from an activity, the receipts from the activity must be reduced by appropriate costs. One such cost is the cost of assets used but not immediately consumed in the activity.[2] Such cost so allocated in a given period is equal to the reduction in the value placed on the asset, which is initially equal to the amount paid for the asset and subsequently may or may not be related to the amount expected to be received upon its disposal. Depreciation is any method of allocating such net cost to those periods in which the organization is expected to benefit from use of the asset. The asset is referred to as a depreciable asset. Depreciation is technically a method of allocation, not valuation,[3] even though it determines the value placed on the asset in the balance sheet. Any business or income producing activity[4] using tangible assets may incur costs related to those assets. If an asset is expected to produce a benefit in future periods, some of these costs must be deferred rather than treated as a current expense. The business then records depreciation expense in its financial reporting as the current period's allocation of such costs. This is usually done in a rational and systematic manner. I have been searching for the last 24 hours online for any issues with Windows 7 64-bit and the Latitude E4300 but cannot find anything helpful for my situation; in fact I have found a couple of sites where people have installed the 64-bit version of Win 7 on thier Latitude and they are having other issues. I have 8GB of memory in the laptop I would like to be able to utilize, but the system type says it is a 32-bit operating system. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the reply Culberti. I have a Dell Operating System Reinstallation DVD which is labeled Windows (R) 7 Ultimate 64-Bit. Is there a way to tell whether it truly is what it says it is? Is there an MD5 hash for the 64-bit versus the 32-bit I can check against a file or files on the DVD? I am at a loss. I thought I had all my ducks in a row when I purchased the laptop and dvd. The laptop came with Vista Business 32-bit installed but I wanted 64-bit Win 7 to take advantage of the extra ram so I bought it separately. The thing is, Dell 'reinstallation' DVDs are just Microsoft DVDs in most cases - they don't even have token activation or drivers inside. If someone is getting a 32bit install from a Dell reinstall DVD, then it's probably just mislabeled (unless it's a dual-layer DVD, it's only going to contain one Windows 7 architecture - given it's specifically labeled 64bit, it likely only has one). @RPSuede, can you post a screenshot showing Windows Explorer with your C: drive open? I am specifically interested in the folders that exist on your C: drive after installing with that Dell DVD. Otherwise, do what gregrocker suggests and download the official 64bit ISO, make sure your checksums match the ISO you downloaded, and install from that. .The thing is, Dell 'reinstallation' DVDs are just Microsoft DVDs in most cases - they don't even have token activation or drivers inside..I beg to differ. Just about a month or two back DELL India sent me the OEM Reinstall Disk (not the Recovery Disk) -Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit - for my DELL Inspiron 1120 (M 101Z) netbook. With a clean install it auto-activated confirming that it has the token activation built-in.( I have checked the OEM-SLP key too after the clean install. Tallies with what I had backed up earlier.) It was also heavy at 5.74 GB. The reason as I found out was it is a multilanguage pack. Similar help and support threads Thread Forum i have a Dell OEM windows 7 x64. After years of throwing make-believe weddings in the backyard, flowers, photography, desserts, and details are what these women do best: a guaranteed perfect, beautiful day full of memories to last the rest of your life. With bridal magazine covers to her credit, Mackensie 'Mac' Elliot is most at home behind the camera—ready to capture the happy moments she never experienced while growing up. Her father replaced his first family with a second, and now her mother, moving on to yet another man, begs Mac for attention and money. Mac's foundation is jostled again moments before an important wedding planning meeting when she bumps into the bride-to-be's brother.an encounter that has them both seeing stars. Carter Maguire is definitely not her type: he's stable, and he's safe. He's even an English teacher at their high school alma mater. There's something about him that makes Mac think a casual fling is just what she needs to take her mind off dealing with bridezillas and screening her mother's phone calls. But a casual fling can turn into something more when you least expect it. And with the help of her three best friends—and business partners—Mac must learn how to maker her own happy memories. It became just one stupid self-imposed conflict after another, sandwiched between way too many Pure boring. She should have had a much lesser role as she was just pure annoying. The romance was flat and predictable, but I did like Carter. He was too good for Mac though. As the book continued I found myself liking Mac less and less. She was a twit with little common sense. By the end I was hoping Carter would meet someone else. I doubt I will continue with series. 3 1/2 stars Nobody writes friendship like NR and I really enjoyed watching the interactions between Mac and her friends. Carter's slightly crazy friend Bob, with his 'helpful' lists, was also fun to be with. In fact, everyone - besides the accidental stressed B, G, MOB, FOB, MOG, FOG, MOH, BM, FG and any other acronym the wedding business can come up with - was nice and fun. That lead to a lack of real conflict in the story, hence my lukewarm rating. I'm curious about Carter and Mac's friends and I'm pretty sure their stories will be at least as nice as this one. P.S.: After rereading my review, I couldn't help noticing how many times I used the adjective 'nice'. Well, what can I say? This was a nice story, LOL. Contemporary romance fans, rejoice! Nora Roberts latest release 'Vision in White' is a light and fun read that leaves you with a big grin on your face. The manager, the baker, the flower lady, and the photographer--each with different backgrounds and different outlooks on life and love. This first story is about the photographer, Mackensie. Mac's home life taught her a lot about love and weddings--mainly that neither were permanent or could be counted on. With the exception of her childhood girlfriends, Mac's never really known much stability in her life. So when she meets the 'Mary Poppins' (i.e., perfect) man, one who makes her feel special and cared for and important--she freaks out.majorly. Carter had a crush on Mackensie back in school. And now that he's a man.well, he still has a crush on her! But it seems that every time he makes headway in their relationship, Mac gets scared and backs off. Good thing Carter is a patient man. Carter is my new best ever Beta hero. He's a professor and quite the nerd, but he's also sweet, protective, and even a bit clumsy. The more you read about him, the more you just want to take him home with you.and then do unspeakably fun things with him (with or without the glasses)! Well, she has some pretty serious issues to deal with and her self-worth is right there at the top of the list. She's stubborn, but she does grow on you and pretty soon I was cheering every forward step she made. Nora Roberts is a genius writer. She somehow taps into the subconscious of women (and men) everywhere. Her books have a happy ending yes, but her characters also have to work for that happy ending. She does her trademark work and brings her cast of characters to life with such vividness that I felt if I just went to their city, I would recognize these people, want to spend time with them, commiserate with them, and celebrate with them. For me, that's the brilliance of La Roberts' stories. 'Vision in White' isn't a melodramatic, emotion-wrenching read. Instead, it reminds me very much of some of her earlier works, the ones that are just darn good romances. No special gimmicks, no mysteries, no death or destruction--just two people living their lives and then discovering that love does exist and it's worth the work to cherish it. Pure romance. ★★★ 3 Rom-Com stars.★★★ Vision in White starts of by introducing a group of besties that run a very successful Event planning agency dedicated mostly to a bride's most defining moment, Her Wedding. That her books cheer me up when I’m sad and comfort me when I’m sick? Well, she is and they do. Which I why I keep going back to her greatest hits time and again instead of reading some of the new and undoubtedly wonderful novels that await on my heavy-ladened shelves. And this series, y’all; it’s definitely one of her greatest hits. *incredibly contented sigh* Four women, best friends since childhood, open an all-inclusive wedding service. One is a photographer, another a florist, the third a baker, and the final friend is the coordinator who holds everything together. All four women are beautiful in different ways (obviously, because this is a romance series), all four are funny and brimming with character, and their relationship with one another is just as important as the romantic relationships that spawn over the course of the four novels. Vows, the business they started together, is just such a lovely creation. The weddings held at their headquarters, the Brown Estate, are always lovely and unique and just exactly right for the bride and groom. I love stories where childhood friends nurture their relationships as adults and find a way to bring their separate passions into a mutual and successful business venture. That’s the dream, and it’s what Mackenzie, Emmaline, Laurel, and Parker have built for themselves. Okay, so while I love the entire quartet, this first installment is my favorite. Mac is a crazy person, funny and focused and messier than she cares to admit. She’s a quintessential redhead with the pale skin and temper to prove it, and she’s an amazing and passionate photographer. And I really enjoy watching her develop. But the main reason I love this book so much is Carter Maguire; he’s one of the absolute cutest guys I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading about. Carter is an English Literature professor, formerly from Yale but now happily teaching at the private high school that is his alma mater. His PhD might intimidate Mac just the teensiest bit, but that doesn’t stop her from finding his tweed jackets and wire-rimmed glasses and blushing ears adorable. I feel ya, girl; I think he’s totally adorable, too. I have such a soft spot for nerdy guys (which is funny considering the fact that I married me a hunk of manly man), and Carter is a king of the nerds. He’s soft-spoken, thoughtful, nervous, and sweet, and all of those qualities are wrapped in a dreamy-eyed package. Not gonna lie: I would’ve been totally hot for teacher if he had taught my English classes. *fans self* All of that to say, I love this series. And I love this book in particular. It’s sweet and funny, not to mention hot. This series is perfect for curling up with on a cold night or a sick day or a long, rainy weekend. It’s my prescription for when you’re feeling down. I couldn't help but love the four girls, I can't wait for Jake and Del to have bigger roles, I'm impatiently waiting for the mechanic to step into the picture, loved the brides, hated the heroine's mother (who didn't?), and I fell for Dr. Maguire (the hero, FYI) the instant he smacked into a wall. I fell for his battleship-sized feet, his klutziness, his cute little quirks, his shyness, and a complete about-face from his everyday persona he showed in the bedroom (*lusty grin*). I know I shouldn't say this about a guy, but he was just so utterly adorable. There's no other word I could use for Carter. Adorable, that's him. This book didn't make run the whole gamut of emotions, but some (and appropriate facial expressions) were there. I cried a little at the sweet and tender descriptions of Mac's photos and weddings, I gritted my teeth and rolled my eyes each time Linda (and then Corrinda) stepped into the picture, I kept my fingers crossed whenever Carter and Mac were together, I wanted to yell at Mac for being so spineless (at the beginning) and so stubborn (throughout the rest of the book) to try and sabotage the vest thing that could've happened to her, I LOLed at the little zingers she shot around, at the banter between girlfriends, at the wedding biz acronyms, and at the one-liners. This wasn't a suspense romance, a police procedural or a murder mystery. Nope, this was a straightforward, lightweight (despite some minor issues due to the 'patsy gene' the H/h exhibited), cute, sweet, sexy, sensual (I love how NR writes her sex scenes!), romantic, friendly, funny little contemporary romantic comedy. Definitely a keeper and highly recommended! 5 stars – Contemporary Romance I’m really surprised by how much I enjoyed this, especially since it was a random read while I was awaiting some August releases and because other than the J.D. Robb In Death books I’ve read, Nora Roberts often tends to be a little too vanilla ice cream for me. But I just loved sweet, shy, nerdy, English professor Carter to bits! It was so adorable and funny how he got so embarrassed over his friend Bob’s dating advice. And the list? He made me smile and giggle so many times. I just wanted to pinch his cheeks and squeeze him tight! And it was sexy when he got all alpha animalistic in the bedroom. The excessive wedding details were a bit boring at times, but I just skimmed those parts. The friendship moments between Mac, Emma, Laurel, and Parker were very realistic and well done. I hated Mac’s narcissistic mother and was so glad when Parker told her off. It’s a feel good read that made me smile throughout. So a surprising 5 stars, and it’s mostly because of a cute geek hero named Carter! Sometime between the Quinn Bros. Trilogy in 1999 and the Key trilogy in 2000, there was a big change in Nora's writing voice. One I really, really don't like. Almost everyone heroine since then has grated on my nerves, with the notable exception of the heroine of Angels Fall. This book is no different. Mac Elliot runs a wedding planning shop with her three friends, in which she is the photographer. She's commitment-phobic because of her parents' multiple marriages and an all-around crappy childhood, and she's a big enabler for her narcissistic mother. When she meets Carter again after being barely acquainted with him in high school, she recognizes that this could potentially be a serious relationship, and she basically sets out to sabatoge it in any way she can. Okay, maybe that's a little harsh, but sometimes I just wanted to take her by the shoulders and shake the crap out of her. Carter is the typical Beta hero that Nora has been falling back on since the Calhoun series: bumbling, soft-spoken, slow to anger teacher hero with simmering passion just below the surface for the heroine. We've seen this character before, and she didn't really make this one any different. At times, he was almost just as frustrating as Mac, because he was just too patient. One thing I did love, and that bumped my rating up, was the friendship between the four women. I can't wait for Parker's story, though that will probably be last, and I'm tentatively excited for Emma's story (and I think I know her HEA) because she seems so fun and cheerful. Because of this element, and because at the very end, Mac redeemed herself by pulling her head out of her @$$, I give this a B. ETA: Changed rating and grade to C after much deliberation. Let me just start by saying that I am a huge fan of Robert's series, which she writes under the pseudonym. I've only read the first four, but I'm a complete addict when it comes to that series. However, there's a good reason why I've never tried anything from Nora Roberts outside of that series. I guess I've always had this supposition that Robert's books are basically contemporary, chaste bodice rippers (oxymoron, I know) with an extra helping of fluff - based solely on Visio Let me just start by saying that I am a huge fan of Robert's series, which she writes under the pseudonym. I guess I've always had this supposition that Robert's books are basically contemporary, chaste bodice rippers (oxymoron, I know) with an extra helping of fluff - based solely on Vision in White, I wasn't far off. Vision in White started off really good. The prologue is cute - but not in a root canal way - it sucked me in and made me think I'd like this. You know how they say don't judge a book by its cover? Well, I guess that applies to prologues, also. Most everything past the prologue was a disappointment. Vision in White begins with Mackensie 'Mac' Elliot and her three BFFs - Emma, Laurel, and Parker - prepping for another 'wedding'. Now, at this time, they're only in grade school, but, just like any child, they love to play make-believe, and their favorite game is Wedding Day. One of them dresses up like the bride, the groom, and the rest act as bridesmaids. Around this time, Mac also gets a gift from her grandfather - a camera. Now, at the tender age of eight, it seems a rather inapt gift. But what Mac doesn't know is that she'll one day be a photographer - and her and her friends will own Vows, a highly successful wedding planning company. Talk about fate. My feelings toward Mac seemed to fluctuate rapidly while reading this. Mac's character started out vapid and uninteresting to me; then slowly she became semi-likable; then she did something really stupid that made me dislike her again; and by the end of the novel I settled on annoying. Carter's an English teacher in his early thirties who's had a crush on Mac since high school. Carter seemed cute in some instances, and in others his character seemed overdone when it comes to the whole geeky role. As the male lead, he was just OK for me. Mac's mother, Linda, is easily one of the most vexing characters I've ever read about. Normally, I wouldn't count not liking a character that you're intended to not like toward my overall enjoyment, but she pissed me off too much for me to ignore it. Linda is emotionally manipulative when it comes to her daughter and I found myself wanting to do the impossible and strangle her character. And she's not the only one! Carter's ex girlfriend, Corrine, is just as strangle-worthy. Mac's mother and Carter's ex should start a club: The Bitches Who Live to Screw Up Everything club. What follows is the scene where everything went downhill for me (bear in mind, this scene is between only Carter and Mac, and the 'me' part is obviously just my inner thoughts as the reader. Also, this isn't a direct quote from the novel, only my satire summarization): Mac: Ahhh! Carter, you geeky stud puppy! If I would've known you were this good in bed, I would've paid more attention to you in high school! Carter: *mentally recites Shakespeare* [Me: If you've read one sex scene, you've read them all. *boredom*] Mac: Mmm. Carter, I'm so happy right now. Here, with you. *thinks to self: Wait! I can't be happy! I'm Mackensie Elliot, happy is horrible! I must ruin this moment!* [Me: I see where this is going, and I don't like it.] Carter: Oh, Mac! I've waited for this moment since I was a geek-in-training! I'm so happy! Mac: *mumbles* There's that bloody word again! Carter: What did you say, honey? Mac: *jumps out of bed, heads for the exit* 'Thanks for the fabulous dinner and multiple orgasms! Carter: *sigh* Well, it was nice while it lasted. [Me: What the fuck?] That's my summarization of that scene, but her actual departing sentence was 'Gotta run. Thanks for everything. I'll call you.' Not much better IMO. See, I have this little List of No-Noes, and running off after sex - whether it be the male or female doing the running - is on that list. So while things were indeed beginning to pick up for me, that scene proved to annihilate my enjoyment pretty fast. If it were Carter that had done the running, I don't think Mac would've been nearly as forgiving. In fact, Carter doesn't even mention the incident. The whole thing just gets swept under the rug. Mac describes their first time together to her friends as 'the most amazing, world-bending, melt-you-brain-cells sex in the history of the planet.' (That is a direct quote, BTW) To which my reaction was, Oh, come on, Mackensie! It's not as if you've just had sex with Roarke! Sorry, that's a bad reference if you've not read the In Death series. Anyway, I thought that was just a tad on the ridiculous sounding side. Now, let me be clear - despite my myriad complaints - I really did like a fair amount of this. It's just that the parts I didn't like eclipsed the parts I did, making the whole thing exasperating and disappointing. One thing I will say, though: The side characters - Emma, Laurel, etc. - seemed more interesting and likable to me. Since I've already bought books 2 and 4, I'll probably end up reading the rest of this series - depending on how the next installment,, turns out. I'm crossing my fingers. I actually don't have any time to read at the moment, but yeah. You know how it is. I took a break from studying in between (my brain felt fried anyway and I wouldn't have been able to stuff in anything more - yes, I am looking for excuses.), and finished Vision in White in a few hours. It definitely does have a standard Roberts plot and most certainly isn't anything breathtakingly new and special, but I knew that up front and didn't expect it to be. It's just the right book if you're looking for a comfort read to take your mind off other things (and if you're in the mood for some light romance). I also enjoyed reading about the whole wedding planner business - although I can see it getting old after a few instalments (there are a total of four books in this series). Nevertheless, I ordered the second book directly after finishing this one - luckily it was available for swapping:). Now, I will be honest here. So, when I stumbled upon this book by Nora Roberts called “Vision in White,” I just knew that this was the book that was going to introduce me to Nora Roberts’ works in a good way! Mackensie “Mac” Elliot had dreamed for all her life about taking pictures at a wedding and she finally has her dreams come true when she and her best friends, Parker, Emma and Laurel all came together to create Connecticut’s wedding planning business called “Vow.” With Mac being a well-renowned photographer, she is able to capture the most beautiful moments at the weddings with a click of her camera. But, unfortunately Mac has no desire to get married despite working at a wedding planning business due to her trust issues that started with her father leaving her and her mother when she was a child and her mother Linda constantly asking Mac for more money, despite the fact that this act is emotionally hurting Mac. Then one fateful day, Mac runs into a shy yet sexy teacher named Carter Maguire, who she has known since high school and it turns out that Carter has been infatuated with Mac ever since they were in high school. Now, Mac must conquer her fears of falling in love with Carter if she has to make her own happy ending. I have to say that as the first book I had read from Nora Roberts, it was simply amazing and heartwarming! I loved the fact that Nora Roberts made friendship and the importance of true love a central theme in this book as I enjoyed seeing how Mac starts developing as a character as she slowly learns to start trusting people despite her tragic past with her parents and the fact that her mother Linda keeps trying to take money from her. I also enjoyed the scenes where Mac confides in her friends Parker, Emma and Laurel about her romantic woes and her issues with her mother as it shows that Mac’s circle of friends are extremely supportive of Mac through her life and it shows that they are truly good friends towards Mac and it makes me want to have such friends in real life! Nora Roberts also did a great job at developing the relationships between Mac, her friends and Carter as not only does Mac have great friends who support her through her issues, but she also has a love interest in Carter who showed her what it is like to trust and love someone again. I loved almost all of the characters in this novel (well, except for the antagonists, of course) as they all felt so genuine and are supportive of each other through tough times. I especially loved the characters of Mac and Carter themselves as they were the stars of the show with their unique romance and support of each other. I loved the fact that Mac is a successful photographer as it shows that she is a strong and determined young woman who is trying to get her personal life together and it was great seeing her character develop throughout the story as she is trying to learn how to trust and love someone again. Carter was absolutely fantastic as he is truly supportive of Mac and knows how to comfort Mac when she really needs it and who says that high school teachers cannot be HOT and SEXY!? For readers who do not like strong language and sex scenes, this book does contain some strong language such as the usage of the “s” word and some sex scenes, so some readers might want to skim over these scenes if they find them to be a bit too much. Overall, “Vision in White” is a truly fantastic book about the importance of true friendship and love and I am sure that anyone who loves a good winter romance will enjoy this book! Because of this book, I'm interested in reading more of her books and the sequels to this one. Mac was funny and sure, the book got a little unrealistic at times and became more dramatic than I like, it was still good. 4.5/5 This is one of Nora Roberts' wonderful love stories. I found many beautiful things in this book: friendships between friends, the warmth of family, unconditional love, and true love from the hero. Nora Roberts has always created such adorable beta heroes. In this book, Carter Maguire was an extremely nerdy guy, but oh, he was so sweet! I always have my soft spot for nerdy heroes. It seemed so simple, natural, but beautiful. This was my feeling after finishing the book. It’s a common story about a women, who is a photographer and have a wedding business with her three best friends. She has a really selfish and manipulative mother and because of it she also has commitment phobia. Then she meets a man and this is what the story is about. See, nothing unusual. But what was uncommon and there for interesting for me was the man himself. I am used to read about uber-alfa men, who radiate confidence and sexuality. Carter Maguire is definitely not like this. He is an English literature teacher in high school, wears tweed and glasses (though manage to look sexy in it), feels like criminal if he exceed speed limits and always opens the doors and helps a lady with the coat. If it is not enough, he has a three legs cat, which he saved after car accident and when he is embarrassed or just shy the tips of his ears blush. Aren't you already in love? He is the cutest man I’ve ever read about. Or as one heroine said about him - The Merry Poppins of men. We all have read stories about confident males courting shy women. There is your chance to read a book about the very sweet man trying to romance a beautiful, energetic, successful woman. What I wouldn't have given for that support at times. This is a great fast read. Not one of NR's in depth or intense books but a great read all the same. For being my first Nora Roberts book, I'm really looking forward to her other books as well.;) CARTER, oh Carter. You are adorable for one. It's so bad that there were moments where I want to pinch your cheeks and you're older than me! He is the perfect husband material and I'm not going to lie, I have a soft spot for smart, clumsy, and patient fellows like him. Everything that he does for Mackensie is so sweet that I fell in love with his character more and more. What's not to love, huh? No wonder Mac had such a hard time trying to keep their relationship 'simple,' aha! It took awhile for her to realize her love for him. It was rather slow, but it was all worth it in the end. Carter's patience really did benefit him in the end, ya know. Anyway, I really did love the high school crush thing developing into true love. It's quite typical but really? It never gets old-- especially when the gal never notices the guy when they were teenagers, but when they meet again as adults, she falls pretty hard for him while his love for her has always been there. But yeah, the ending was perfection and let me forewarn you, it will cause you to feel all bubbly and warm. And now, let's talk about Mackensie! I went for her and Carter all the way because I love how she is with him. They're perfect for one another, even though Parker once said in the beginning that they were complete opposites. Although there's one thing that I find frustrating most of all about her, and that is her relationship with her mother, Linda. I didn't like how her mother had the power to control Mac's life and influence her relationship with Carter. It really wasn't fair and Mac just let it happen! *Shrugs* Seriously, her mother was a whiny, selfish bitch but either way, she got what she deserved in the end, sorta. Mac finally toughened up and kicked some major butt! I have a lot of favorite quotes in the book and let's just say they include Carter's moments with Mackensie AND BOB. He's like the best fail friend you meet at work, who gives you dating advice while Carter just face palms. It's so ridiculously funny that I love it! An example of such would be: 'If it winds up earlier, you should have a movie picked out. This is assuming she isn’t sending you the ‘let’s go back to my place’ signals. In that case—” “Don’t go there, Bob. Let’s just not go there.' Overall, I think I'm in love with this book and I'm definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series. Giving a five-stars for this lovely book full of laughter, smiles, and most of all? An all consuming love that slowly grows and develops into a beautiful picture.:D. This one is no different - I thought the story of Mac having to deal with her mother was very well-written. I enjoyed the new 'background' of this first book in the quartet, in that it centers around four friends who own a business that covers each and every detail of having a wedding. This book's main character, Mac, is a photographer, and I truly enjoyed reading about her job and how she came to love what she does. The secondary characters - Parker, Emma, Laurel - were all well-rounded, and I'm highly looking forward to reading each of their stories. So, okay, it's another typical Nora Roberts read. Dark Passage, the 2nd book in M. Putney's terrific series is out today. The Irregulars return home to 1803 England safely, but their worldview has changed. Not only have their heroic efforts at Dunkirk given them pride and confidence, but their dangerous mission has increased their magical powers. Tory delights in the ever-deepening bond she shares with Allarde, until she discovers how powerfully he is connected to his ancient family estate—the lands he will not inherit unless he denies his magical powers and chooses a non-magical mate. If Tory really loves him, she must walk away—but does she have the strength to leave the love of her life? Cynthia’s heroic efforts at Dunkirk have won her the respect of the Irregulars, but her sharp tongue keeps everyone at a distance. Isolated and very alone at Lackland Abbey over the Christmas holidays, Cynthia reluctantly agrees to join Jack Rainford and his family for their holiday celebration even though they’re commoners, far below her own noble rank. The warm acceptance of the Rainfords makes her feel happier and more accepted than she has ever felt. But she can’t possibly be falling in love with flirtatious Jack! Then the Irregulars are drawn into a dangerous attempt to rescue a vitally important French scientist from Nazi-occupied France. Countless lives are at stake, but when their mission goes awry, will they all survive to return home? The first book was wonderful--hope you enjoy book 2 as well. Although brought up in an eccentric, unlovable family, Jocelyn still knows how to love. She loves her younger brother and her odd mother and the parrots her older half-brother sold when he inherited their father’s estate. She does NOT love her half-brother. She doesn’t love stuffy, annoyingly improper Blake Montague, either, but she can tell he’s a man of integrity, and he has what she needs—a house for her little brother and their parrots. And she has what he needs—a dowry. Both being semi-sensible people, they see the advantages of bringing these assets together. What they don’t see is the life-changing alterations they must make to fit their radically different outlooks into one household. Blake would rather shoot birds than feed them, but if he wants in his new wife’s bed anytime soon, he must make a few adjustments. Falling in love wasn’t in his plans. You can see my funny entry--and Happy Reading, Eileen. Today, author Kathryn Johnson joins us to chat about her new book, The Gentleman Poet, A novel of love, danger, and “The Tempest”which comes out on Tuesday, September 7th.! Many scholars believe one of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays, The Tempest, was inspired by a shipwreck and true tale of survival that captured the imagination of 17th-century London. In the book, Kathryn proposes the questions what if the greatest playwright of all time didn’t simply read about the wreck of the Sea Venture off the Bermuda coast? What if Will was on board, fleeing powerful enemies, daring one last great adventure? A very intriguing plot. BAnews: How much of The Gentleman Poet is real—actual history, that is—and how much is fiction? Kathryn: Many of the names for characters and their roles came directly from the ship’s manifest and from the account of the wreck written by one of the passengers, William Strachey. I also relied a great deal on the timeline provided by Strachey’s journal. But what these characters actually said to one another—or how their individual adventures played out—all of that is purely my imagination at work. BAnews: Can you give us an example of the mix of real and fantasy in the story? Kathryn: Sure. In Strachey’s account of the days the survivors spent on the island, which amounted to about 9 months, he mentions that a serving girl Elizabeth Persons married the ship’s cook. So one assumes that a romance developed and that, despite their dire circumstances, love was still alive and families were being formed among the group. So in the story, Elizabeth and Thomas the cook fall in love. BAnews: You’ve set The Gentleman Poet in 1609. Can you tell us what in the story might be relevant for us in the 21st century? Kathryn: Well, many things in life never change. People in times past worried about how to support themselves and their families. They took risks, as we do, in their careers and life choices. They feared disease, war, persecution, getting old, loss of loved ones. So the characters in my story are very similar to people we meet every day in the 21st century BAnews: Tell us about the research you did for the book. Did you spend a lot of time in archives, studying letters and other records? Kathryn: The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. Was an amazing help. They have, I believe, the largest collection of Shakespeare-related material in the world, including several of the priceless and rare First Folios, a collection of Shakespeare’s plays printed by his friends after his death. There I found two amazing accounts of the shipwreck of the Sea Venture, which was bound for Jamestown in 1609. It was this ship and its survivors who, legend tells us, inspired Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest. BAnews: Any exciting research trips? Kathryn: I also went on location, so to speak, in Bermuda (tough work if you can get it—LOL!), which is the setting for most of the story. I spent two weeks touring the island and studied some of the artifacts salvaged from the wreck, which still lies in the coral beds just east of the Bermuda coast. And by the way, Bermuda is a super spot for a reading vacation—full of legends, ghost stories, and there are guest houses where you can stay very reasonably, some of them centuries old that were built as homes for privateers. BAnews: What about survivors. How many made it to shore after the wreck? Kathryn: That’s one of the amazing things about the historical account. It tells us that there were 150 crew and passengers aboard the Venture when it ran aground on the reef, less than a mile from land. They’d just suffered four terrible days at sea, nearly sinking in a hurricane. But here they were within sight of land, and the captain somehow got every single person safely to shore. And there they lived for 9 months, building a new ship, which eventually carried them the rest of the way to Jamestown. Talk about courage and persistence! BAnews: That is amazing. But how did Shakespeare find out about this wreck without the modern advantages of the Internet, Facebook, twitter, telephone, email, or even telegraph messages? Kathryn: Most scholars believe that Strachey’s account traveled back to England on a ship from Jamestown. When Londoners learned that the Sea Venture hadn’t been lost and its passengers were still alive, it was huge—something akin to man walking on the moon. Shakespeare must have seen a copy of that letter. Read his play, The Tempest, and you’ll see that the similarity with the wording with some parts of Strachey’s account is uncanny. For instance, Will seems to have lifted whole phrases from the ship’s historian to use in his opening storm scene! BAnews: But then again, Shakespeare was famous for borrowing from other writers— Kathryn: Exactly! Will was the ultimate literary recycler. But what he did with those characters and storiesoh my! That’s why he lives today through his plays. That’s why hundreds of theaters and festivals across the country, and around the world, still perform him. And I guess that’s why I just had to write this book. I took my cue from Will. I borrowed his tempest and put it in my novel. Thanks Kathryn for stopping. We'll all look forward to reading The Gentleman Poet. For more about Kathryn and her book, check out her website, Kathryn also provides writing tips on her website. This week, author Alison Buckholtz has stopped by Book and Author news for a short interview about her new book, Standing By, The Making of an American Military Family in a Time of War, which will be in bookstores, April 2. B&ANEWS: Alison, tell us about the book Standing By--why you decided to write it and what you hope to accomplish. Alison: I grew up in a non-military family. I really had no concept of what the military was like, or of military family life. It was like a new culture with its own lingo, traditions, and accepted social mores. I felt like an outsider. But year by year, as I became more assimilated into this new world, I found that my civilian friends started asking me what it was like. Over and over again, they said “How do you do it?” I knew they were also asking “Why do you do it,” because the sacrifices that military families make can seem incomprehensible to others. I came to understand that somewhere along the way, I had become an insider. So I wrote STANDING BY, which is about the challenges and rewards of life as a military family, to introduce this world to others. I see my role as a translator between two Americas. We’re not unique among military families. Countless other parents and kids have experienced the same stress of separation after 9/11. Since then, especially among Army, Marine and National Guard families, deployment requirements increased significantly when compared to historical norms of the past few decades. So we know we are not the only ones to question the effect of this lifestyle on family relationships. I certainly know that I am not the only wife who mourns her husband's long absences. I hope that military wives reading this account of our experience feel a little less alone. Even more than that, though, I hope that this book can help bridge a gap in understanding between civilians and military personnel in America. Since the abolition of the draft in the U.S., in 1973, the gulf between two groups – civilians and military – has deepened dramatically. It’s hard for one side to reach out to the other. I'm now an insider, and it made me want to speak directly to all of those people who don't know anyone in the military. I used to be one of those people, so I understand some faulty assumptions that are often made. B&ANEWS: What can everyday people do to help military families and show their support? Alison: If people are interested in volunteering, there are so many worthy organizations that help servicemembers and their families. One of my favorites is Cards for Heroes (). Its volunteers create blank greeting cards and ship them to servicemembers overseas so that deployed military members can write to their families and friends back home. Of course, organizations like Fisher House (), which provides lodging to servicemembers’ families so that they can be close to their injured loved one, is always in need of support. However, any heartfelt offer to help the spouse of a deployed servicemember is valuable, because the stresses of being a stay-at-home parent during deployment are sometimes difficult to manage. B&ANEWS: First Lady Michelle Obama is also focusing on military families. What three areas would you recommend that she work on first? Alison: I’m thrilled that Mrs. Obama is focusing on military families. There are so many areas in need of attention, but to me among the most important is the health and well-being of children of deployed servicemembers. Data show that the satisfaction of the military spouse is a primary reason for a servicemember either staying in or leaving the military. If it’s true that a mother is only as happy as her least happy child, then the health and well-being of the military child is more important than anyone has yet acknowledged. Academic studies, such as the peer-reviewed research published late last year in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, conclude that children aged 5 years and younger who experience the deployment of a parent exhibit significantly increased aggression and anxiety compared to children without a deployed parent. These results are a call to action. Military bases need professionals who are trained to address children’s psychological needs. In our case – and ours is far from unique -- there is no child psychiatrist or medically-trained mental health specialist for children on base or in the town the base is located in, even though our insurance covers the referral.
